So whats all the fuss about wigs you ask …. well…?

There are many reasons someone may want to wear a wig from just wanting to look different to having cancer and losing all your hair. Therefore, there are also lots of different kinds of wigs to accommodate all kinds of situations and to be used by both men and women. There are also party wigs , cosplay wigs – you name it !

Firstly, there are two main kinds of wig making styles:

Ready-made wigs

These wigs are the kind you can buy right off the shelf. They are normally made with synthetic hair and are pre-styled, with one size fitting most people. Some say since they are not made to order that they don’t look very realistic, but they are normally the ones that cost the least.

Custom wigs

On the other hand, a custom made wig is one made precisely for the wearer. They are said to be more comfortable, as well as more realistic. They are made to match the wearer’s hairline so they blend in better.

Types of Wigs

Next there are four main wig types. These include polyurethane, mesh, combo and open weft. Plus you can get a full wig, a part-wig to cover just the top of the head, and various kinds of hair pieces to cover part of the head.

Polyurethane Wigs

These sort of wigs are normally a bit thinner and come in various colors. The wearer will search for the one that blends in the best with their own coloring. They have a skin like material and the wearer will use tape or some sort of adhesive to hold it on their head. One issue with this material is it doesn’t breathe well so it can make the wearer’s head get hot. Some people say they feel thicker and they sometimes get a floaty feeling on the scalp.

Mesh Wigs

These are manufactured with monofilament or full lace. The latter combines swiss lace, as well as glass silk. It’s also one hundred percent hand-tied. The monofilament types are also one hundred percent hand-tied, and have both single as well as double options. Usually they are either nylon or polyester blend.

This kind is more breathable than the polyurethane wigs, so it’s great if the wearer is  concerned about getting overheated. Plus it blends in with whatever scalp color the wearer has. That means it looks more natural and it can also be parted so it looks like it’s real hair growing out of the wearer’s scalp. Plus you can style them, which makes them more versatile and natural looking.

Anti-Slip Wigs

Also known as a suction wig. These are good if the wearer is totally bald. The base consists of monofilament and at transparent form of polyurethane, and as their name suggests they hold onto the wearer’s scalp via a suction process.

Combo Wigs

A few of the monofilament wigs may have a top that’s hand-tied, while the back is made by a machine. They cost less than the 100 percent hand-tied models.

Lace Front Wigs

A lace front wig is just what it sounds like. These have lace in the front and a sheer mesh in the base. The base also has a thick cap or a clip so it’s easier to make it stay on the head. They are tied to the wearer’s real hair, and the lace then sits alongside the wearer’s forehead at the hairline.

Welded Lace Wigs

These are made of fibers tightly interwoven together. That makes it possible to make a part anywhere on the wig the wearer desires. Plus it is quite strong and durable. Be sure not to try to trim them though, as they can fall apart.

French drawn wigs

These are made with three material layers. There’s one of swiss lace mixed in between two layers of glass silk. The wearer ties the lace part to their own hair. They are said to be comfortable for the wearer, as well as look pretty real since the layering makes it less likely to notice the knots used to secure it.

These only cover part of the wearer’s head and are meant to enhance the wearer’s hairstyle and blend into their own hair. They can be used to cover a balding spot on the head too. There are banana comb, claw clip, and drawstring type attachments.

Partial Wigs

Another name is a wiglet. These as the name suggests only cover a portion of the wearer’s head. They are bigger than the hairpieces, but smaller than regular wigs.

Types of Wig Hair

There are also two kinds of hair used to make wigs: human or synthetic. Human hair wigs of course are the ones that look more realistic, are more costly and are harder to care for. However, they usually will last at least a year if you take good care of them. The top grade of human hair is called virgin hair, which means the entire wig came from one donor, and it was not permed, dyed or bleached.

Synthetic hair wigs are more limited than human hair wigs, and not as durable. They will last up to six months if you take good care of them. However, one type of this is heat friendly. That kind only lasts around three months. Synthetic hair wigs are cheaper than human hair wigs.

All in all, the type of wig you buy depends on your needs and what you want to accomplish, and how you want to look.
